Course Presenter:  Dr. Kathleen Gates, PhD. License clinical Psychologist graduated from the University of Vermont. She has 40 years of clinical experience in a private practice setting. She’s provided clinical supervision for pre and post-doctoral interns in a community outreach clinic. She has consulted extensively with physicians, community leaders and the police.

Intermediate level course

Course Description:  Understanding culture helps service providers avoid stereotypes and biases that can undermine their efforts. It promotes a focus on the positive characteristics of a particular group, and reflects an appreciation of cultural differences. Culture plays a complex role in the development of health and human service delivery programs.

Objectives

The clinician will be able to identify barriers and bias in treating individuals from different cultures.

The clinician will be able to modify and use interventions based on the race, ethnicity and language spoken.

The clinician will be able to identify resources that are available to eliminate the language barriers and communication barriers.

The clinician will be able to discover the culturally diverse needs of the client.
